BIOGRAPHY

DEDE GOLD (b.1971) came in a roundabout way to being an artist. She grew up in Ireland and graduated in law from Trinity College, Dublin in 1993. Having practiced as a solicitor in Dublin and London she then spent some years in the flat racing world of Newmarket before following her heart and devoting her life to art.

Learning her initial skills in the atelier community of Lavender Hill Studios she then went on to develop her own approach to painting through travels to Italy and New York.

Prior to her most recent collaboration with Peter Curling and Mark Coreth for their Dublin show (www.curlingcorethgold.com) Dede has had three solo London exhibitions to date, most recently in the Sladmore Gallery in 2016 and has regularly shown in art fairs in London and New York. Her paintings are held in private collections in the US, UK and Ireland, from homes of legends of the turf, to a Baywatch actress on Long Island, to landlords who so kindly put a roof over her head in exchange for portraits along the way.

Best known for her characterful canines, her muses tend to be ‘dogs from the hood’ rather than pedigree aristos and posh pooches. Hounds are an irresistible subject of hers – being drawn to their huge personalities, seeing and portraying them much more as a group of individuals than ever as a pack.  She prefers to meet them on downtime, in kennels, to find their quirks and distinctive vibes.  Melancholic, defiant, flirtatious, arrogant, mischievous, each one she meets gives her a different message which she endeavors to commit to canvas. It is the attitude, the soul and engagement that interest her not the obvious outward handsomeness itself.

Dede’s reputation as a canine artist was crystallized when two of her paintings were included in a 2015 publication  - ‘The Book of The Dog’ – featured alongside the work of her heroes Sargent, Degas, Hockney, Freud and Stubbs.

Horses are a new focus in her work.  Having spent her married years riding out for a patient Newmarket trainer, it was those mornings on the gallops and the spoilingly close proximity to the finest flat racing pedigrees that left her in awe of the beauty of these glorious subjects and with a life long mission ahead to capture an ounce of their magic. One landscape was included in her recent show – of Albert Bridge – a special soul spot during her London years.

Dede now divides her time painting between her Cotswolds studio and her homeland of Ireland.
